Look at the protocol of the scanner and use transaction UCCHECK for afirst look. Perhaps it is enough to switch on the Unicode flag.
Until the program the program is enhanced, it will not work. As thescanner does not know, wether this is an important program or a lessimportant program, the impact on the system is not known.
