Diagnosis
The employee has given notice of intention to take either StatutoryMaternity Leave or Statutory Paternity Leave (birth) before they haveprovided the required certificate. There are different certificatesnecessary to establish eligibility for these two types of statutoryabsence:

• Statutory Maternity Leave

The required certification is a MAT B1 form, which the employeereceives from the doctor or midwife, stating the expected date ofdelivery of the baby.
Note: If the MAT B1 form was signed more than 20 weeks beforethe week in which the baby is due to be born, it cannot be accepted forStatutory Maternity Leave entitlement.

• Statutory Paternity Leave (birth)

Self-certification via Form SC3 is required for entitlement to thisform of paid absence. The employer cannot demand to see Form MATB1 inthis instance.
